San Antonio, Texas, is one of America’s most amazing cities. There are so many things to do and see, and the arts and entertainment options are wonderful! The following list includes some of San Antonio’s best arts and entertainment options that you should definitely check out.
El Mercado
El Mercado is the backbone of San Antonio’s history and culture. There are many entertainment options including shopping and dining. There are also lots of public markets that sell a wide range of authentic goods. The Mexican influence in El Mercado is strong and it really is a submersion in Mexican culture for its visitors.
Symphony
The San Antonio Symphony provides outstanding live orchestral concerts. It’s truly an educational opportunity to visit the San Antonio Symphony, and it’s completely beautiful to listen to. The symphony performs at the Majestic Theatre.
Alameda Theatre
The Apollo Theatre for Latinos is the Alameda Theatre. This theater hosts Spanish entertainment and is the largest theatre in the US to do so. It was opened in 1949 and is the last of its breed. However, it has undergone renovations and will continue in the future as a state of the art theatre capable of hosting all kinds of entertainment.
Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum
This art museum is truly extraordinary and definitely worth a visit when in San Antonio. A mansion, private art collection, and a large sum of money were bequeathed by Marion Koogler McNay in 1950. Artists like Henry Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Paul Cézanne, Diego Rivera, and Georgia O’Keefe are on display. The grounds are impeccably landscaped and visiting the museum is truly a wonderful experience.
Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center
Art by Latino, Indigenous, and Chicano individuals is displayed at this arts center. This non profit organization was founded in 1980 and provides programs on literature, dance, media arts, Xicano music, and visual arts.
Southtown
Another place you must see in San Antonio is Southtown. This area is full of trendy shops, historic homes, artist’s lofts, galleries, and a diverse array of restaurants. Southtown is south of San Antonio and although it is not on the typical list of must see places in San Antonio, it should be. It truly is worth the visit.
As you can see there are quite a few places in San Antonio that are all about arts and entertainment and aren’t the common tourist attractions. Of course plenty of tourists check out these places, but not as many as the Riverwalk and the Alamo. That is good news for you because it means you can have a great experience without fighting the crowds!
